Grandinote Mach 8 XL: what a near-crossoverless speaker asks of the room

The Mach 8 XL combines eight conventionally unfiltered drivers, a horn and Grandinote’s SRT enclosure. Here is what is specified, what one review observed and what remains unmeasured.

Simple architecture, qualified

The Grandinote Mach 8 XL combines eight unequalised mid/bass drivers without a conventional electrical crossover and a horn-loaded compression tweeter. The source describes one capacitor providing a first-order high-pass filter for the tweeter at roughly 5 kHz. Everything else relies on the mechanical behaviour of the drivers and the enclosure Grandinote calls its Semi Resonance Tube, or SRT[1]. “Crossoverless” is therefore a useful shorthand, not a claim that no filtering exists anywhere in the system.

The published numbers and the missing curves

The specifications reported by the review are 98 dB/W/m sensitivity, a nominal 8-ohm impedance and a 19 Hz–20 kHz frequency response[1]. High sensitivity and the nominal impedance suggest substantial output from modest amplifier power, but they do not describe the full electrical load. Without impedance-magnitude and phase curves, amplifier compatibility across the band remains unverified. The 19 Hz figure is not independently measured in the available material either. The reviewer questioned it and estimated solid output only into the upper 20 Hz region in his own room and system[1].

Grandinote attributes greater speed, detail, coherence and spatiality to the simplified signal path. Those are manufacturer claims, not LineaSonora measurements. The source also provides no directivity, off-axis response or distortion plots from which to predict how the horn will behave in different rooms.

SRT does not mean semi-open

The available description is of a reinforced-MDF cabinet with a downward-firing port, operating as a hybrid transmission-line/bass-reflex enclosure. Its tube is too short to qualify as a conventional transmission line, which is why Grandinote uses the SRT name[1]. That does not make the cabinet semi-open, nor does it identify which room modes it will excite. Position, room dimensions and listening location still matter, but a specific outcome requires evidence from the actual space.

One documented setup, not a universal placement recipe

In the reviewer’s room, the port did not create an obvious problem and positioning was comparatively quick. His final layout placed the speakers about 22 inches from the front wall, three feet from the side walls, eight feet apart and nine feet from the listening seat, with moderate toe-in[1]. That is useful as a documented case, not as a transferable prescription. A buyer should first account for the cabinet’s 174 × 34 × 34 cm dimensions, symmetry and enough clearance to test placement.

Spikes: an audible difference is not a measured improvement

The review says that fitting the supplied spikes made a larger-than-usual difference and speculates that alternative isolation feet might improve the result[1]. It does not publish measurements or identify a changed parameter. Describing the spikes as improving definition would therefore overstate the evidence. The practical conclusion is narrower: floor interface deserves a controlled comparison with level, placement and the physical safety of this tall speaker held constant.

A system-matching checklist

  • Amplifier: use the stated sensitivity as a starting point, but do not treat nominal impedance as a complete load description.
  • Room: allow for position and toe-in experiments rather than copying one reviewer’s distances.
  • Bass: verify response at the listening seat; the 19 Hz claim remains independently unconfirmed in the evidence used here.
  • Floor interface: compare supports as an installation variable, not a guaranteed upgrade.

Conclusion: keep the claim as narrow as the evidence

The Mach 8 XL is technically interesting because it moves much of the dividing work from a complex electrical network into driver and enclosure behaviour. The available evidence explains that architecture and records a favourable result in one room. It does not establish universal placement, an always-benign amplifier load or a measurable benefit from every support option. Impedance, directivity and response data are still needed before a single review can become a robust system recommendation.
