PSB iQ Series: Map the Phono, TV and Streaming Paths Before Choosing iQ1 or iQ2
A verified PSB iQ1/iQ2 protocol map: MM phono, HDMI eARC, BluOS, wired versus wireless stereo, system limits and the checks that matter before buying.
The useful question is not whether the system is “all in one”
PSB’s iQ1 and iQ2 combine loudspeakers, amplification, conversion, streaming and several physical inputs. That removes boxes from a room, but it does not remove choices about protocols, signal paths or long-term support. The practical buying question is therefore: which of your sources can enter the system, what happens after they do, and which dependencies remain?[1][2]
This article consolidates two earlier LineaSonora pages about the same iQ launch. It preserves the useful vinyl question from the retired page, discards its unsupported predictions about audible “analogue magic”, and integrates phono into a broader map of TV, network and local-source use. LineaSonora has not installed, measured or listened to either model.
What PSB has actually announced
The series contains two powered stereo pairs. The iQ1 links its primary and secondary speakers with a cable; the iQ2 uses a low-latency wireless link between channels. Both use the BluOS platform, support playback up to 24-bit/192 kHz, and share the declared 270-watt system total, four-inch mid-bass drivers and 0.75-inch aluminium-dome tweeters. PSB documents different tweeter-amplifier arrangements: the iQ1 uses a shared two-channel stage while the iQ2 gives each tweeter its own 45-watt amplifier.[1][2]
The shared input list is unusually broad for a compact active pair: HDMI eARC, RCA, optical, USB-C, USB-A, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Bluetooth aptX Adaptive. A subwoofer output applies DSP-managed low-pass and high-pass filtering. BluOS adds more than twenty streaming services, local libraries, multiroom playback and integration with named home-control systems.[1][2][3]
Those are documented features, not a listening verdict. “270 watts” does not by itself predict usable output in a room, and access to a high-resolution file does not establish audible superiority. PSB publishes a 64 Hz–20 kHz on-axis range within ±3 dB and a 35 Hz low-frequency cutoff at −10 dB for iQ2; room, placement, level and subwoofer integration remain material variables.[3]
The preserved vinyl question: an MM input is a convenience, not an analogue guarantee
Both models include a moving-magnet phono preamplifier. A compatible MM turntable can therefore connect without a separate external phono stage, which is the concrete reader value that the earlier vinyl article identified.[1][2] Regional product pages and launch coverage also list the phono connection alongside BluOS and HDMI eARC, confirming that it is part of the intended multi-source design rather than an incidental socket.[4][5][6]
That does not answer every vinyl-path question. The public launch material reviewed here does not give input capacitance, gain, overload margin, signal-to-noise performance or a documented analogue-bypass diagram. It also does not state, in the cited pages, exactly where analogue-to-digital conversion occurs. A claim that the system preserves, softens or improves a record’s “texture”, microdynamics or recorded ambience would therefore be speculation without measurements or a controlled comparison.
Before connecting a turntable, verify that the cartridge is MM-compatible, confirm the required grounding arrangement with the manual or dealer, and ask whether the phono input is digitised for DSP and multiroom distribution. These are system-architecture questions; none implies that conversion is necessarily harmful. The right conclusion is narrower: the input lowers setup friction, while the missing electrical and routing detail limits what can be claimed about performance.
iQ1 versus iQ2: the channel link matters more than the finish list
The two models share more of their platform than their names suggest. Their decisive architectural difference is how the left and right speakers communicate. The iQ1’s cable creates a visible connection but avoids relying on a wireless inter-speaker link. The iQ2 provides more placement freedom, but adds another radio-dependent part of the daily system. PSB describes the iQ2 link as low latency; LineaSonora has not independently tested delay, interference recovery or resynchronisation.[1][2]
Finish options and regional prices are secondary to that choice. PSB announced the iQ1 in black and white and the iQ2 in seven finishes, with global pricing and availability varying by country. Retail pages are useful availability snapshots, but they are not durable worldwide price authority.[1][4][6]
Build a protocol map for the room you actually have
A prospective owner should map each daily source to a named route:
- Television: HDMI eARC, with the TV’s format and control behaviour verified on the exact set.
- Turntable: the built-in MM stage, after cartridge and grounding compatibility are confirmed.
- Disc player or other digital source: optical or USB, depending on device output and format.
- Computer or phone: USB-C, Bluetooth or a network service, each with different control and compression implications.
- Local library and multiroom: BluOS over Ethernet or Wi-Fi, with the required service, NAS and controller support checked in the current software release.
- Deeper bass: the subwoofer output and its DSP filters, followed by placement and crossover verification.
Independent launch coverage usefully confirms the product’s multi-source positioning, but repeats much of the manufacturer’s feature set. It does not replace measurements, long-term app testing or a room-specific installation report.[5][7][8]
The lifecycle trade-off is real
Integration moves several upgrade decisions into one product. In a modular system, a streamer, DAC, amplifier or phono stage can be replaced separately. Here, the useful life of the whole pair depends partly on software support, service availability and repairability as well as on the drivers and amplifiers. BluOS is an established platform, but buyers should still check required services, local-library behaviour, controller operating systems, update policy and the recovery path if network setup fails.
This is not an argument against active speakers. Fewer boxes, shared control and a coherent crossover can be substantial practical benefits. It is an argument for treating software and signal routing as part of the hi-fi specification rather than as invisible convenience.
A decision checklist that survives the launch cycle
- Choose wired iQ1 or wireless-linked iQ2 on placement and reliability needs, not finish alone.
- List every source and confirm its exact physical or network path.
- For vinyl, verify MM compatibility, grounding, phono-stage specifications and conversion behaviour.
- For TV, test eARC control, lip-sync and the formats used by the actual television.
- For streaming, confirm services, local libraries, multiroom zones and controller support.
- Ask how firmware, warranty service and hardware repair are handled in the buyer’s country.
- Audition at realistic level and placement; do not infer sound from amplifier wattage or file resolution.
The iQ Series has a credible proposition: broad source access and stereo playback in a compact system. Its strongest case is not that it makes vinyl more authentic or digital audio automatically better. It is that it can make several daily sources easier to use—provided the buyer verifies every dependency the “all-in-one” label leaves out.
