Black Box HG-2 and elysia karacter on UAD: what Apollo users gain

The Brainworx emulations already existed in native and AAX formats. The change is Apollo/UAD-2 DSP execution, with low-latency workflow and a Universal Audio hardware dependency.

The emulation is not the new part

Black Box HG-2 and elysia karacter existed as Brainworx-developed plug-ins before they appeared in the UAD catalogue. Calling them processors that have only now been virtualised obscures the material change. The July 2026 release brings those emulations to Apollo and UAD-2 DSP; it does not mark their first existence as software[1][2][3][4][5].

That distinction affects the buying decision. Someone already using native editions does not automatically receive a new algorithm or proven sonic superiority. The UAD edition offers a different execution route: compatible Universal Audio hardware, the Console/Apollo workflow and processing that does not consume the host computer's main CPU.

Two architectures for different jobs

HG-2 models a stereo valve processor with blendable pentode and triode stages, parallel saturation and additional controls for shaping the colour. Its operational value lies in metering harmonic density into a track, bus or mix. Air, Density, calibration and Mix are documented features of this emulation; they should not be attributed to karacter[1].

karacter starts from another design: discrete Class-A solid-state saturation with three modes—Saturation, FET Shred and Turbo Boost—Drive and Color controls, and stereo, dual-mono and mid/side operation. That makes separate treatment of the centre and sides possible, or allows two unlinked channels. The specification describes a range from restrained colour to obvious distortion; it cannot establish how the result will fit a particular source[2].

What an Apollo owner gains

The clearest benefit is workflow. DSP execution can monitor an input through processing at very low latency, print the effect when appropriate or keep it in the monitor path, depending on the setup. It can also preserve host CPU in a large session. That is an operational improvement for someone who already owns the hardware, rather than a universal reason to enter the ecosystem.

The trade-off is equally concrete: these editions require Apollo, UAD-2 Satellite or UAD-2 PCIe hardware. Earlier Brainworx versions were already offered in native and AAX formats through other channels. UAD therefore does not mean VST, AU or AAX did not exist; it means a version tied to Universal Audio DSP is now available[1][2][3][4].

How to compare without being fooled by level

A useful test starts by matching output level. Saturation can raise RMS and harmonic energy, and a slightly louder result often appears more impressive even when the tonal balance is not better. Compare with gain compensation, inside the mix and with longer bypass periods. Only then ask whether the processor adds a function that existing tools do not cover.

For HG-2, separate the pentode and triode blend, the parallel path and the added controls. For karacter, assess the three modes independently and watch what happens to transients and low-frequency material. With no published measurement set and no controlled LineaSonora test, we do not claim absolute hardware equivalence or a general audible improvement.

What this means for listeners

These plug-ins sit in the production chain, not in a domestic playback system. A listener receives the resulting master but cannot identify which processor created a texture from the sound alone. Saturation interacts with equalisation, compression, arrangement and limiting. Assigning depth or presence to a specific brand without the session, settings and comparisons would invent causation.

Conclusion: an infrastructure decision

HG-2 and karacter extend the DSP choices available to Apollo/UAD-2 owners. The rational decision rests on whether low-latency monitoring, host-CPU relief and session recall inside that environment justify the hardware dependency. Anyone who already owns the native versions should compare workflow, licensing and cost before accepting a story about a newly born emulation or an unproven sonic advantage.
